Stay in Your Lane

According to the Urban Dictionary, slay queens are ‘young and naive girls who apparently do not date broke men’. I care less about naivety, what takes my attention is ‘do not date broke men’. The harsh judgment this aspect attracts from the society baffles me, I beg to question. Is it a sin to be ambitious? Don’t we all have dreams? Shouldn’t they be praised for harbouring high expectations? Now am starting to think all these social media trolls that constantly bash the slay queens are broke, especially guys. I mean if you can’t afford to take care of someone why don’t you find someone else of your class. All am saying is, stay in your lane. Don’t be bitter because you can’t have her, she has standards and clearly, you are not anywhere close to them lol.

The definition continues ‘they spend hours on Snapchat and Instagram showing off things they don’t even own’. Am thinking, this is all in the name of validation? That’s the problem with social media, everybody looks rich out there and Y’all feel pressured. Look, sis, it’s not that deep, trust me. Don’t go out of your character to prove to everyone that you are living a certain lifestyle. Apart from 5-10 people that know you in real life, the rest don’t care. They won’t even remember your name till they bump into your picture wearing a beautiful dress that you have just borrowed. You are already beautiful, why are you breaking your neck to prove a point? Stay in your lane and make sure you are blessed in real life and not just in social media.

Still, according to urban dictionary slay queens are ‘girls who do not have a wealthy background but appear as if they do. They use malicious acts to attain cash, drink expensive alcohol and procure expensive cell phones’. The most common ‘malicious’ act that we all assume is using ‘sponsors’. Men way older than them with wives and kids to finance them and provide all the expensive things they need to flaunt on social media.

Here is the thing, 20 years from now you will not look the same. The beauty you are using right now to get the lifestyle will finally fade, then what? You have nothing to show for yourself; damn, you are not even a WhatsApp admin. What will you do? What is your plan? Not that I care but I care about the wives of the men you are using. Stop hurting other women almost the age of or older than your mother. Leave the married men alone. Stay in school, get your degree, get a job and be proud of yourself. Too much work? Not really.

At the end of the day, we all want to win and look good but it will feel much better if you earn it.
